In the field of food preservation, encapsulated Essential Oils (EOs) could be the best non-toxic and eco-friendly tool for food preservative applications substituting the chemicals ones that have several disadvantages for the environment and health. Thirteen commercial EOs from plants, fruits, and vegetables were characterized by GC-MS. The antioxidant activity was measured by DPPH and ABTS,Deterpenation of eucalyptus essential oil by liquid+liquid extraction: Phase equilibrium and physical properties for model systems at T=298.2K. The Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics 2014 , 69 , 66-72.
This Special Issue welcomes original research and reviews on essential oil extraction methods associated with chemistry and related bioactivities fields. The focus is on the variability of composition in relation to various factors, such as climatic or harvest time, nutritional status, or the isolation method used. ,• Describe secondary metabolite extraction methods. • Extract essential oils from biomass using steam distillation equipment. Pre-Lab Background Secondary Metabolites . The primary goal of plants, like all organisms, is to grow and reproduce. Most of the metabolites produced by plants, therefore, are polysaccharides and proteins that give the
Essential oils derived from the supercritical CO2 extraction of herbs are similar to the oils produced through distillation in that they can be used in aromatherapy and natural perfumery. Oils derived from steam distillation vary in their qualities depending on the temperatures, pressures, and length of time applied for the process. ,Subcritical water extraction (SWE) of essential oil (EO) from Citrus hystrix DC. leaves was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM), involving factors of particle size (0.5-1) mm
The supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of the aerial parts of Perovskia atriplicifolia Benth. was studied. The effect of different parameters such as pressure, temperature, modifier identity, and modifier volume on the SFE of the plant was investigated. The extracts were analyzed by GC and GC-MS and compared with the essential oil obtained from P. atriplicifolia Benth by steam distillation,Essential oils (EOs) are lipophilic secondary metabolites obtained from plants; terpenoids represent the main components of them. A lot of studies showed neurotoxic actions of EOs. In insects, they cause paralysis followed by death. This feature let us consider components of EOs as potential bioinsecticides. The inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is the one of the most investigated
Therefore, one of the major emerging technologies is the extraction of essential oils from several plant organs and their application to foods. Essential oils are a good source of several bioactive compounds, which possess antioxidative and antimicrobial properties, so their use can be very useful to extend shelf-life in food products. ,Essential oils are primarily composed of terpenic hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds, which impart the most pronounced flavors and the best sensory properties, whereas terpenic hydrocarbons tend to decompose when heated or exposed to air, resulting in a loss of sensorial quality.
The volatile oil of Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton seeds was obtained by supercritical CO2 extraction (SC-CO2). The effect of the extraction conditions on the yield and composition of the resulting cardamom volatile oil was examined by testing two pressure values, 9.0 and 11.0 MPa; two temperatures, 40 and 50 °C; two flow rate values, 0.6 and 1.2 kg/h; and two particles size values, 250−,NOTICE: We are experiencing some intermittent issues on IOPscience which may cause some performance problems on the site. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
A new method was proposed for extraction of essential oil from Cuminum cyminum L. • Natural deep eutectic solvents had a clear impact on the essential oil extraction. • Higher yield, more substances and premium quality of essential oil were obtained. • An eco-friendly, low-cost and highly-efficient approach was presented for cumin. ,The most efficient extraction technique was maceration followed by microwave and ultrasound. The best extraction solvent system was ethyl ether + ethanol (1:1, v/v). The main compounds identified in Ocimum basilicum L. extracts were: α and β-pinene (mixture), limonene, citronellol, and geraniol.
In the effort of innovation towards green analytical chemistry concepts and considering the six principles of green extraction, the industrial turbodistillation process was downscaled into a laboratory apparatus turbo-Clevenger (TC) for the extraction of essential oils. Turbodistillation is used as an industrial purpose for the extraction of essential oils from hard matrixes such as wood,The optimal extraction conditions were a microwave power of 786.27 W, liquid-to-material ratio of 7.47:1 mL/g, and extraction time of 35.57 min. The yield of essential oil was 3.26 ± 0.05% (w/w), and the recovery of polyphenols was 4.97 ± 0.02 mg gallic acid equivalent/g dry weight under the optimal conditions.
This study proposes a rapid solid-phase extraction (SPE) of essential oils from citrus, including pomelo and lemon, using graphene aerosol (GA) as sorbent based on a π–π conjugative and hydrophobic interaction. The graphene aerosol was fabricated by the hydrothermal reduction low-temperature freeze-drying method, and its morphology and structures were analyzed by scanning electron,This study was designed to examine the in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the essential oil and various extracts obtained from aerial parts of Thymus eigii. The essential oil was particularly found to possess stronger antimicrobial activity, whereas other nonpolar extracts and subfractions showed moderate activity and polar extracts remained almost inactive. GC-MS analysis of
A novel one-step sample preparation technique termed ultrasound-microwave hybrid-assisted extraction coupled to headspace solid-phase microextraction (UMHE-HS-SPME) was developed in this study, which was used for the determination of essential oils in dry traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) based on gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The dry roots of Angelica dahurica were used as the,An alternating synergetic ultrasound/microwave method was applied to the simultaneous extraction of essential oils and polysaccharides with deep eutectic solvent (DES) from Schisandra chinensis. Under the optimal conditions, extract in the selected choline chloride-ethylene glycol 1:3 solvent yielded 12.2 mL/kg and 8.56 g/100g of essential oils and polysaccharides, respectively. The free

Received over $6 million in US government funding for innovative process control solutions. ,Acid testing is an important maintenance function for companies using nPB in their vapor degreaser. nPB-based solvents can turn acid if you don’t regularly monitor the acid level of the solvent; sometimes this can get really nasty. A vapor degreaser that has “gone acid” will actually eat away the internal surfaces of the machine.
(Restek) was used to extract volatile compounds. The fibers were conditioned before use and thermally cleaned between analyses by inserting the fibers into the injector port of a gas chromatography system set at 270°C for 30 min in a stream of helium. 2.3 | HS-SPME/GC-MS analysis Headspace SPME that is a clean-up of procedure was used to extract ,The concentrations of PA and βC in the paste sample were 63 and 9 times that in the fresh sample, showing that essential oils are mostly stored in oil glands.
